Mesothelioma Symptoms

Symptoms of mesothelioma will vary depending on the tumors' location and stage. Regardless of whether they form in the lungs, abdomen or heart, patients may experience such symptoms as shortness of breath, pressure in the chest, weight loss, constipation, coughing, and raspy speech.

These symptoms may appear minor and can be confused with common, less-serious conditions, such as bronchitis or pneumonia. As a result, mesothelioma may go untreated. If mesothelioma is undetected and untreated for too long, it may progress rapidly from Stage I, in which a small number of tumors are located around a single site, to Stage III or IV. In these stages, the tumors have spread to other areas of the body.

To prevent this from happening, patient must tell their doctors about any exposure to asbestos, even it was 30 or 40 years ago. As with any cancer, early diagnosis is the key to effective treatment.
